Despacito was released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the most streamed song within six months. The mix of reggaeton with pop music not only brought attention back to the genre, but also to Latin music all over the world. The Billboard Top 100 had four songs during 2016, which was compared with two in 2015. At the peak of Despacito's success in 2017, 19 songs mainly composed in Spanish made it to at the very top of 100. This number rose to 41 in 2020. Following the time that Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular artists began collaborating with reggaeton artists. Drake and Bad Bunny worked together for the track MIA MIA (2018) as did Madonna and Maluma on Medellin, Madonna and Maluma collaborated on Medellin 2019, which was released in 2019. By 2020 a few reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at their genre's shift towards the mainstream but a new generation specifically Rauw Alejandro was determined to maintain the pace of evolution in reggaeton. The genre often incorporated elements of different genres as well as electronic dance.
